The history of the development of an ammonoid stratigraphy of the higher Middle Devonian and the Late Devonian rock sequence in the Rhenish Massif is reviewed. Of 45 currently distinguishable ammonoid zones in the Givetian, Frasnian and Famennian stages, at least 38 were recorded in the Rhenish Massif.
