Radar polarimetry towards a future standardization

Abstract

Neuf instituts de recherche de l’Union europeenne ont reuni leurs efforts dans un projet sur la theorie et les applications de la polarimetrie radar. Bien que la polarimetrie radar soit deja prise en compte dans la definition des scenarios de teledetection de l’environnement terrestre, dans la facon d’effectuer les mesures microondes et optiques, de realiser la prevision meteorologique ou de concevoir les futurs systemes de telecommunication, elle n’a pas encore montre a ce jour tout l’impact souhaite ni atteint tout son potentiel attendu. Une des raisons principales de ce retard est l’absence d’une theorie coherente et fondee de la polarimetrie radar. Le projet qui durera 36 mois (du 01-04-1998 jusqu’au 31-03-2001) est destine a pallier ce manque. L’article en presente les objectifs principaux.
