Neither in our clinical material nor by the examination of temporal bone specimens could we discover a particular predisposing factor or a special mechanism of injury which would lead us to suspect a round window membrane rupture. However it is evident, that different mechanisms of injury may cause a rupture of the round window membrane, such as barotrauma, physical effort, blunt head trauma and direct injury to the middle ear.
