A note on extent of selfing in interspecific crosses ofSaccharum

Abstract

Information on the amount of selfing in sugarcane crosses is very scanty because in intervarietal crosses, it is not possible to distinguish progenies from selfs and crosses. An attempt was made in the present study to assess the occurrence of selfs in three crosses effected during 1994–95 involving improvedS. officinarum with pollen fertility of 35–40% andS. spontaneum with pollen fertility of 70–80%. The true hybrid progenies were identified by the presence of thin, hardy, vigorous, narrow leaved canes which were high tillering with low H.R. brix. The percentage of selfing appeared to be low ranging from 0.72% in Co 86010 x PIS 38 to 8.69% in PIO 88–96 x IND 82–319. By providing sufficient pollen load using strong male parents, selfs can be considerably reduced and hence their occurrence may not pose any problem in evaluation of superior crosses.
