Colorectal biopsy specimens and appendices from fourteen patients showing intestinal spirochaetosis were evaluated for the presence of inflammatory cells, mast cells and IgE-containing cells. There was no difference between these and normal controls. Review of clinical features showed no consistent symptoms. Irritable bowel syndrome and pseudoappendicitis were common. Our study provides no evidence to incriminate intestinal spirochaetes as pathogenic organisms.
