A fairly typical example of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia is recorded in a girl of 4 1/2 years. There were some unusual features about the patient, such as retarded mental development, very extensive lesions in the bones, predominance of cartilage in bone biopsy and anaemia with nucleated red cells in the peripheral blood. The patient died shortly after leaving hospital owing to intercurrent infection. The differential diagnosis of the disease is discussed.
