Abstract

An outbreak of trichinosis involving at least 26 people in Cork in 1967 is described. One death possibly due to the disease is reported. It was not possible to trace the source back to any particular bacon factory. The vehicle was almost certainly sausages and /or a pork product consisting of sausage meat and scraps of raw pork. There was a preponderance of female cases. The bentonite flocculation test and latex agglutination test are useful diagnostic adjuncts. Thiabendazole is a possible preventive and curative drug in the disease.
