Hypertension caused by renal abnormalities represents a small but significant percentage of the total hypertensive population. In each case, the abnormality affects renal hemodynamics, resulting in the excess secretion of renin. Renal hypertension may result from major vascular abnormalities--most often stenoses--microcirculatory disease, and renal parenchymal processes that secondarily affect the circulation.
