The requirements for nucleic acid precursors byAcholeplasma laidlawii type A, strain LA 1, were studied. The absence of a requirement for ribose or deoxyribose and the interconvertibility of uridine and cytidine contrasts with previously reported results with strain pG 8. Growth of the LA 1 strain was only moderately inhibited by a ten-fold excess of RNA over DNA. The only required nucleic acid precursors were guanine, thymine and either cytosine or uracil.
