The main features of martensite transformation kinetics observed in steels are surveyed. The quantitative analysis of the data relating to isothermal transformation is emphasized as the starting point for a more general understanding of other types of kinetic behavior. It is concluded that the distinction between athermal and isothermal kinetics is purely empirical, and that athermal transformation should be regarded as a rapid isothermal reaction.
