In studying the β-xylosidase production by yeastCryptococcus podzolicus (Basidiomycetes), it was shown to be an inducible secretory enzyme. Xylooligosaccharides generated from xylan and methyl β-xyloside were found to induce the β-xylosidase synthesis. The enzyme activity in the medium containing xylan or methyl β-xyloside was 1.0 and 1.5 U/ml, respectively; this production level is similar to that achievable at the β-xylosidase production by mycelial fungi.
