By means of a variational principle together with a principle of total angular momentum, the general equations of motion of a particle with internal spin are deduced. This procedure gives rise to a differential equation which the components of the spin angular momentum tensor must satisfy. The general solution of this differential equation permits a classification of most previous theories which profess to provide a basis for this type of motion.

| selected citations These citations are derived from selected sources. This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 5 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Average | |
