We have constructed a motor-driven calibrating device which simulates a highly reproducible maximum expiratory flow-volume curve. The calibrator can be used to assess the dynamic performance of spirometric instruments. Regular use of the calibrator helps to ensure constancy of measurements obtained from flow-volume or volume-time recording systems. The calibrator reproduces a standard forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in 1 sec with an error of 0.6% or less.
