Recent work on the optical model is illustrated and discussed, in view of the accurate phenomenological analyses of experimental data and of the fundamental analyses, based on the nucleon-nucleon interaction in nuclear matter, that have been carried out in the past years. Attention is restricted to the nucleon-nucleus potential, although many of the new results have implications for light- and heavy-ion potential as well
