Enterovirus infections are probably very common during pregnancy and the first month of life. While the vast majority are likely to be benign, there is significant potential for severe neonatal morbidity and mortality. Possible subtle effects of intrauterine or mild postnatal disease have not been investigated. Much further epidemiologic work must be done before the need for effective prevention can be assessed.
