Special-effect colours, such as those produced by coatings containing metallic and mica pigments, have rapidly grown in popularity over the last 50 years. Originally used to give glamorous metallic effects on top-of-the-range cars, they are now widely used in products such as cosmetics, mobile phones and packaging materials.
