Microbiological contamination of polymer emulsions depends on a large number of chemical and physical factors and an integrated approach to prevention and cure is required. By paying careful attention to raw material and water quality, improving plant design and hygiene and using effective broad spectrum biocides, especially those based on isothiazolin-3-one derivatives, the effects of microbial growth can, at least, be reduced and at best eliminated.
