Climb sources inβ’-NiAl

Abstract

Climb sources have been observed in Al rich alloys of β’-NiAl by Tisoneet al1 and Marshall.2 In the present investigation the influence of thermal treatment and composition for climb source operation was investigated. It was found that the climb sources were activated by cooling from a high temperature at rates between 700 and 30,000°CJh or by quench-annealing treatments. The climb sources were found only in specific Al rich alloys containing impurities and evidence is presented which suggests that the particles required for climb sources contain Al, Si and O.
