La question de l'existence du milieu poreux equivalent a un milieu rocheux fracture est abordee et on montre que celle-ci n'est assuree que sous certaines conditions, qui ne sont pas toujours verifiees dans la nature. Le volume elementaire representatif, qui est le volume minimum de terrain a prendre en compte pour definir le milieu poreux equivalent, quand c'est possible, peut egalement etre considere comme le volume minimal que doivent affecter des essais a l'eau destines a determiner le tenseur des permeabilites du MPE. Differents exemples permettent d'illustrer l'importance fondamentale d'une etude approfondie de la fracturation avant la realisation d'essais a l'eau, et l'interet de modeles de simulation du champ de fractures s'appuyant sur des essaisin situ destines a caracteriser les parametres de fractures individuelles.
