Arguments have been forwarded in favour of the view that the stalk ofCaulobacter is part of the living cell. Accordingly the familyCaulobacteriaceae Henrici et Johnson should be set apart from bacteria growing on stalks made of secreted material. This should be achieved by elimination of the latter from the suborderCaulobacteriinae Breed, Murray et Hitchens.
