The paper considers peculiarities of design of cruciform specimens for fracture toughness tests in biaxial tension. Their advantages and disadvantages have been analyzed and a design of a cruciform specimen which is easy to fabricate is proposed on the basis of the results obtained. It allows studying the crack growth kinetics under biaxial loading in the temperature range from 293 to 20 K by direct observation of the crack propagation zone using optical devices.
