For estimating the brittle strength of cracked dry and wet quartz without defects of the crystalline lattice, the authors use a version of the Novozhilov criterion and the so-called ``a discrete-integral criterion'' previously obtained by the authors. Quantitative estimates of critical loads obtained by means of these criteria completely coincide with the observed intensification of wet-quartz grinding.
