11 New Zealand white rabbits with 45 degree midshaft oblique osteotomies were stressed in shear while monitoring acoustic emission events. The ringdown counting method demonstrated a reasonably reproducible pattern when counting events against load; that is, each fracture remained essentially quiet until over 50% of load to failure had been applied. The rate of events to load increased sharply just before and during failure. This technique has clinical possibilities.
