Abstract

An understanding of swallowing disorders rests mostly on a knowledge of the normal physiology of deglutition. This paper reviews current concepts of the processes involved in deglutition and summarizes quantitative data on the physiological events that form a normal swallow. Topics covered include stage descriptions of deglutition, neural regulation, sensory processes, and principles of motor control.
