In einer retrospektiven Studie wurde der Verdacht auf eine Parapoxvirus-Infektion bei drei im Jahre 1963 in einem bayerischen Jagdrevier tot aufgefundenen Hirschkalbern (Cervus elaphus) durch eine elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchung bestatigt. Die makroskopischen und histologischen Befunde entsprechen den Veranderungen bei der labialen Form des Ecthyma contagiosum. Diese Mitteilung durfte der erste Bericht uber das Vorkommen von Ecthyma contagiosum bei Rothirschen in freier Wildbahn sein.
