Malabsorption on a basis of pancreatico-hepatic disease is more common than usually considered. The symptoms of this type of malabsorption are usually not diarrhea, but may be more those of general weakness, flatulence, anorexia, weight loss, and abdominal discomfort. A definitive diagnosis can now be established more readily with recently introduced tests. The clinician, particularly the gastroenterologist, must attempt to treat these patients on a practical but methodical basis derived from his understanding of fat digestion and absorption, with the aid of the more powerful pancreatic concentrates available to him. Among the pancreatic enzymes available the new one, Cotazym, seems to offer more efficient treatment of this type of malabsorption.
