Autoaggressive T cells specific for the PNS myelin P2 protein play a central role in the initiation of EAN in the Lewis rat, although there is as yet no direct experimental evidence that the T cells can themselves mediate demyelination in vivo. However, the striking similarities in the pathogenesis of EAN and the Guillain-Barre syndrome suggest that T cell mediated EAN provides an excellent model to study the immunological mechanisms of inflammation and demyelination that are relevant to human PNS disease.

| selected citations These citations are derived from selected sources. This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 9 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Average | |
| influence This indicator reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | Average | |
| impulse This indicator reflects the initial momentum of an article directly after its publication, based on the underlying citation network. | Average |
