Sulphated proteoglycans were isolated using a dissociative method of extraction. Cerebrum accounted for the major portion of proteochondroitin sulphate in brain, whereas the brain stem fraction contained over half the proteoheparan sulphate. Chemical characterization studies demonstrated that heparan sulphate from cerebellum contain more N-sulphate glucosamine residues.
