Abstract

Cuculus canorus hat in der Palaarktis ein weit ausgedehntes Verbreitungsareal. Im mittleren und sudlichen Afrika ist er durch eine nahe verwandte Form,Cuculus gularis, vertreten. Die Frage, ob der athiopische oder der palaarktische Bereich als Ausgangsbezirk dercanorus-Evolution gelten kann, last sich auf Grund des Flugelbaues beantworten. Die athiopischen Kuckucksarten — abgesehen vongularis — sind durchweg stumpfflugelig; sie sind teils Standvogel, teils fuhren sie geringe Wanderungen aus. Die palaarktischen Kukkucksarten haben als Anpassung an ihre betrachtlichen Zugleistungen wesentlich spitzere Flugel. C. gularis ist in seinem Flugelbau mit den palaarktischen Kuckucken identisch. Hieraus wird geschlossen, das er ein Abkommling des palaarktischencanorus sein mus, entstanden durch Zuggaste, die einst im afrikanischen Winterquartier zur Fortpflanzung geschritten sind. Beispiele fur das Bruten palaarktischer Zugvogel im afrikanischen Raum werden genannt. Die Ansiedlung desgularis-Vorfahren in Afrika fand wahrscheinlich schon im Pleistozan statt.
