In designing electromagnetic circuits the pole surface leakage flux introduced by an air-gap, must be known. After defining the so called “utilization factor”, a review of the existing formulas for calculating it, is given. The major part of the paper deals with the presentation of a new and very accurate formula, based on the method of conformal mapping. Finally this formula is compared with experimental results.
