This comparison of “traditional methods” versus “therapeutic community” demonstrates that patients have a way of disappointing us—no matter what! Nevertheless, the authors have developed a useful instrument for measuring change in hospitalized patients. Most important was the finding that the 23 patients in the therapeutic community showed a significant increase in confidence in the staff, while the control ward actually showed a slight decrease. The paper was presented at the Fifth World Congress of Psychiatry, Mexico City, December 1971.
