Unbleached kraft pulp is partially delignified on incubation under specified conditions with ligninolytic fungi, thereby decreasing requirements for bleaching chemicals. Studies withPhanerochaete chrysosporium demonstrated important effects of nutrient nitrogen and molecular oxygen concentrations. Possible approaches to rate enhancement are suggested.
