1. Confirming earlier studies (Schrader 1945a and b), the chromosomes of the harlequin lobe of the testis of the pentatomid Loxa flavicolis are found to be asynaptic throughout late meiotic prophase and to divide equationally at metaphase I. All other lobes show a normal meiosis. 2. Some new evidence is presented for a reduction in chromosome number in the second meiotic division of the harlequin lobe. 3. Cytophotometric determination of relative amounts of DNA (Feulgen) and histones (Alfert-Geschwind Fast Green) in nuclei of normal and asynaptic lobes show that asynapsis is correlated with a 3/2 ratio of histone to DNA. 4. The 3/2 ratio is interpreted not as an increased amount of histone but as a change in the chemical union between histone and DNA, or alternatively with a change in the kind of histone present.
