
Fracturing Characteristics of Two Granites Thin sections of two granites with different grain sizes and similar compositions were bonded to plexiglas slides and observed by optical microscopy as the samples were loaded in compression or tension. It was concluded that Griffith Cracks could be one of many weakness planes and were dependent on grain size, recrystallization, and other properties of the granite. Most fractures were intergranular in tension and intragranular in compression.
