Observations of the effect of halogen derivatives of deoxyuridine, known to affect the synthesis of deoxyviruses (DNA-containing viruses) show that measles virus replication is unaffected. This suggests that measles virus is a ribovirus (RNA-containing virus). Measles virus causes haemagglutination of rhesus monkey red cells but possesses no neuraminidase, yet measles virus receptors on the red cell are destroyed by neuraminidase.
