Despite the lack of adequately controlled clinical trials and sophisticated cryopreservation protocols, infertility experts increasingly employ banked semen for TI, satisfied by the expectation of 10% monthly fecunditied and cumulative pregnancy rates of 65–75%. This arguably enviable position reflects, principally, the fact that human sperm cryosurvive well relative to other mammalian sperm. Moreover, unlike the case with eggs or embryos, the large number of cells involved allows success even in the face of relatively low cryosurvival rates. Undoubtedly, pregnancy rates will benefit by future basic and applied investigations on the direct and indirect factors involved in TI with banked semen.
