Two types of rubber seals are used to join the pipes which deliver oxygen to the bottom of a converer: a circular ring, the specifications of which are given by GOST 9833-73; cuffs, the specifications here given by GOST 14896-74. The performance of the rings is determined by the resistance of the rubber to oxygen, the tightness of the seal, and the contact stress between the rings and pipe. The use of cuff seals is complicated by the rotation of the converter trunnion, so the main requirement for seals of this type is wear resistance.
