The author gives a review about results concerning the solvability of nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems. He discusses some fundamental methods from the theory of monotone operators and topological methods for proving the existence of the solution of various types of boundary value problems (e.g., quasilinear equations, nonlinear b.v.p. of arbitrary order).
