The excitation profile of overlapping receptive fields of the lateral geniculate body in the cat during presentation of a cross-shaped stimulus was reconstructed from the single unit response. A pointwise description of images was shown to be formed at the lateral geniculate body level, in the form of an excitation profile that changes with time. The level of excitation is determined by the contrast of the stimulus.
