A fire protective coating based on a soluble silicate was investigated in terms of intumescence, water sensitivity, and water absorption versus relative humidity. An acidic curing agent was used to improve the coating performance. The mechanism of intumescence of the silicate-based material was studied using DSC and TGA techniques.
