1. Enhanced formation of nitric esters in the oxidation of cellulose with nitrogen oxides occurs when N2O3 is absent from the oxidizing mixture. 2. A maximum rate of oxidation of cellulose by N2O4 is attained at a definite content of NO in the mixture of oxides, and under the conditions applying in this investigation this NO content was 7–10%. 3. A scheme of the oxidation mechanism is proposed in explanation of these facts.
