A method of investigating R-curves in ceramics is described and results of testing it are given. Nonlinearity and hysteresis in the load-deflection diagram and residual deflection of specimens after their unloading were detected for specimens with a crack. It is suggested that friction between walls of the crack is the cause of this. A model is proposed for estimation and consideration of the effect of frictional forces when determining crack resistance.
