Substances with antibiotic activity have been found among the terpenes. Aliphatic terpenes (citral, citronellol, linalool, etc.) bestow antibiotic activity on several ethereal oils relat ive to cer tain Gram-pos i tive and Gram-negat ive bacter ia [1, 2]. The antifungal activity of the hydrocarbon squalene, widely d i s t r i buted in nature, likewise has been demonstra ted [3]. In recent years juice extracts have been investigated and extensive studies have been made of the antibiotic proper t ies of ethereal oils, alkaloids, glucosides, tannins, individual organic acids, and so on [4].
