Manufacture and repair of the hearth top layer by sintering coarse (screen oversize) magnesite powder mixed with slag or scale did not give uniform wear over the whole hearth area. Local areas of wear, and consequently low spots, would appear on the hearths immediately after the first heat and sometimes a considerable part of the sintered layer surface would break away. The main reason for the short life was lack of uniformity in the material composition.
