In order to determine the role of the metal and the acidic center in paraffin hydrocracking on reduced nickel silicate, the authors investigated the effects of catalytic poisons that selectively poison the L-centers (piperdine) and the metallic nickel (thiophene) on the rates of cleavage of n-dodecane and hydrogenation of 0-xylene. IR spectroscopy was used to monitor the interaction of the catalytic poisons with the surface of the reduced nickel silicate. The results of this research are described in this article.
