1. The quantitative relationship obtained between the carbon concentration in the case and the basic parameters of the vacuum carburizing process makes it possible to determine the effective case depth for any ratio of saturation and diffusion times. 2. The duration of the diffusion stage dependents on the final surface concentration of carbon required. 3. The variation obtained for a given duration of the diffusion stage is in better agreement with the practical results than that obtained by the Harris equation ordinarily used for this purpose.
