A simple method for adjusting light coupling between two waveguides is presented. The method involves trimming the interaction length by loading a metal film on to one of the coupled-waveguides. It is effective only for the TM mode, and trimming can be achieved very simply. The operational principle is experimentally examined using an optical directional coupler fabricated inc-plate LiNbO3.
