Corresponding to different effects of fixing materials used, the statistical results of comparative measurements of healthy human epidermis were presented individually. Because of the modest amount of samples available, it is not possible to draw absolute conclusions from the results. The results of the study do make it possible however, to surmise that in spite of increased cell production beginning with the end of the fourth decade of life, a slowly increasing shrinkage of all epidermal cell layers occurs. In parallel with this shrinkage, the maximal cell volumes in the stratum germinativum shift from higher to lower values. Although the cell and nuclear volumes do not change synchronously, the cell volumes steadily decrease as age increases. The values obtained for the nucleus to plasma ratio indicates that with increasing age, the ratio of the nucleus to the cell body can be relatively large in the epidermis.
