The boron concentration in a boride coating peaks at 0.5–0.6 µm from the surface. There is a surface layer 9–12 nm thick, which consists of oxycarbides and contains no boron, although this layer does not prevent it from diffusing from the medium into the metal. The surface layers thinner than 0.5 µm are depleted in boron.
