In a day having 12 hours each of light and darkness mitotic periodicity has been found in Closterium siliqua and Cosmarium botrytis, there being a peak in the dark period. C. botrytis also has a low back-ground mitotic level at other times. The mitotic time was calculated in Closterium siliqua as follows:
